CELL- Centre for Ecological Learning Luxembourg has been collaborating with the Municipality of Beaufort since March 2019 to realise and coordinate the Generatiounsgaart Beefort project.
The Generatiounsgaart Beefort is a natural and ecological garden with a pedagogical vocation, involving everyone, regardless of age or origin, resident or not, in the municipality of Beaufort. The garden functions holistically according to the ethics and principles of permaculture and serves as an open classroom and recreation area for school classes and any other group or individual.
The primary mission of the Generatiounsgaart project is to prepare children and young people for life in harmony with nature so that they can become responsible citizens for present and future generations. In transition to a more sustainable development, the common objective is to make everyone aware of the complexity of the issues at stake in our society and to enable everyone to acquire the techniques, skills, values and knowledge necessary to guarantee a harmonious and balanced development in order to be able to act in a more responsible way towards our environment. The aim is to give the opportunity to reconnect with nature in a playful and participatory way with the aim of developing a strong sense of our natural environment. All our fruit and vegetables are planted with the children and are then processed in our activities.
The garden aims to take the first step towards a food transition and focuses on raising awareness of the fundamental themes of permaculture and organic market gardening. The garden consists of a production area and a processing area for the products grown there. Apart from learning how to grow fruits and vegetables in harmony with nature, the cooking aspect is an essential element in encouraging people to eat healthily and naturally.
In addition, the project envisages the regeneration of the soil in order to avoid erosion and to promote the biodiversity of the land.
Since January 2019, the three plots of a 50-ar (1/2 ha) complex have been transformed from a simple orchard to a vegetable garden, or forest garden, containing a greater diversity of trees and plants growing on different levels (or strata). This type of cultivation is designed to provide, in a small area, an intensive production of diversified foods as well as a source of organic matter for multiple uses.
Since January 2019, the majority of the uncultivated area has been transformed into a productive garden. A biotope of a large herb spiral with a pond was created, from which various aquatic species can be observed. Since then, nature has changed completely and the systems that have been set up are working independently.
